Palo Santo or "Holy Wood" is the aged heartwood of the Bursera graveolens tree. Bursera graveolens is native to the dry tropical forests from the Yucatán Peninsula to Peru.
Palo Santo is widely used by shamans of the Andes to cure fevers, infections, and skin diseases. The smoke of Palo Santo is rich in terpenes that allow for spiritual purification, energy cleansing, and the restoration of tranquility and calm emotions in those who inhale it.
Unfortunately, much of the native range of Bursera graveolens has been decimated by deforestation and over-harvesting for use as incense, medicine, and spiritual work. The largest remaining population of Palo Santo trees in South America grows in the Parque Nacional Machalilla in Ecuador.
In Ecuador, Bursera graveolens are federally protected and conservationist earn profit to invest back into the forest by collecting and selling the branches and trunks that have fallen naturally. Petrichor of Pachamama sources our Palo Santo from our partners in Parque Nacional Machalilla. Over the last 10 years our partners have planted over 30,00 trees back into the forest and have done extensive research into the propagation of trees to expedite reforestation.
The scent of Palo Santo is a sweet, musky citrus.
