Tillandsia butzii

Tillandsia butzii has tentacle-like leaves that are quite similar to T. caput-medusae and T. bulbosa but what makes T. butzii stand out is the wispy leaves that are mottled with green and purple. This plant is a bulbous variety on air plant native to  the tropical montane cloud forests of Central America. T. butzii readily produces offsets, and with time will form an attractive clump of plants.  When in bloom, T. butzii produces a single bright red spike from which violet flower arise.

T. butzii has very few trichomes therefore it will need higher humidity and less light than other air plants. We recommend displaying your T. butzii in an area that receives indirect light. This plant is prone to rot as the tightly packed leaves that form the bulbous base are excellent at trapping water; because of this, we recommend misting this species frequently (about 3 times a week). Increase the frequency of misting if your home is very dry.

Fertilizing is not necessary; however, it encourages faster growth, off-setting, blushing, and blooming! To fertilize, we recommend misting your specimen with a foliar fertilizer such as our Foliar Feed at least once a month.

Your specimen will be about 8 inches tall and the circumference of the bulbous base varies.
