Tillandsia scaposa

Tillandsia scaposa this plant has had a bit of an identity crisis! It was first considered a cultivar of T. Ionantha, then it was decided that it was its own species and was renamed to T. kolbii and later changed to T. scaposa. This plant is native to the forests of Oaxaca and Chiapas Mexico and Guatemala. In habit they most often can be found clinging in clumps of 3 to 5 plants on trees and rock faces but they also have a tendency to grow on telephone lines! T. scaposa readily produces pups after blooming. Juvenile plants are green with a strong silver hue due to an abundance of specialized microscopic cups called trichomes. When these plants reach maturity they begin to “blush,” with warm reds, yellows, and oranges before producing vibrantly violet flowers.

As with most Tillandsia, T. scaposa enjoys bright indirect light. This species of Tillandsia does not like to be submerged in water as it is prone to rot. We recommend that this species be water with heavy mistings with purified water 2-3 times per week or more often if the air in your home is very dry.

Fertilizing is not necessary; however, it encourages faster growth, off-setting, blushing, and blooming! To fertilize, we recommend misting your specimen with a foliar fertilizer such as our Foliar Feed at least once a month.

Your specimen will be 2-to-3inches in height.
