Tillandsia tectorum 'Ecuador'
Tillandsia tectorum ‘Ecuador’ is hands down my favorite air plant! If a snowball were a plant it would be a T. tectorum ‘Ecuador’! In fact, in Ecuador these plants are often used to simulate snow in Christmas displays. Don’t let the looks fool you though, this plant grows among cacti on rocky outcrops high in the Andes mountains where the environment is extremely unique. The climate is extremely arid and some of the only moisture that plants get to survive on is from low lying clouds that roll past. T. tectorum ‘Ecuador’ has adapted by growing the largest trichomes of any air plants in order to maximize water absorbing surface area-- that’s what makes this plant oh so fuzzy. When in bloom T. tectorum ‘Ecuador’ will send out a red 1.5 foot fuzzy stalk of pale lavender flowers.
T.tectorum ‘Ecuador’ should be treated very much like a cactus. They grows best in full sun to partial sun and do best with infrequent watering and sparse fertilizing. It is important that you do not soak or dunk your T. tectorum ‘Ecuador’ as they are prone to rot. We recommend that you thoroughly mist every 2-3 weeks
Your specimen will be about 5-6 inches in diameter
