Myrrh Resin
Commiphora myrrha is a tree that secretes a fragrant resin that we refer to as Myrrh. This tree is native to the Arabian peninsula and Horn of Africa.
The use of myrrh dates back as far as 28 BC and has been used in many different religious, cultural, and spiritual settings. For example, myrrh is mentioned in numerous ancient religious texts like in the story of the three wise men in the Bible or it is also found in the incantations of the Greek Magical Papyri.
It was also used in ancient medical practices as ancient peoples believed that myrrh had antiseptic, anti-tussive, abortive, and anti-spasmodic properties. The antiseptic properties is one of the main reasons that in Egypt and ancient Judea myrrh was used in the embalming process to preserve the departed.
The burning of myrrh is still common practice in religious, cultural, and spiritual settings and is said to have psychoactive effects that boosts the spirits and the soul of those who inhale the fragrant smoke. Through scientific investigation it has been found that myrrh containsfuranoeudesma-1,3-diene a compound that can activate opioid receptors that control feelings of reward and pain.
The scent of Myrrh is woody with a slight medicinal note and has undertones of leather and pine.
