Tillandsia stellifera is a show stopper! That’s no surprise, though, because T. stellifera belongs to the Tillandsia tectorum species complex, which is arguably the most exquisite of the air plants. T. stellifera grows on rock faces high in the Andes mountains of Ancash, Peru. This environment is extremely arid, and some of the only moisture that plants get to survive on is from low-lying clouds that roll past. Just like the rest of the tectorum species complex, T. stellifera has adapted by having some of the densest and largest trichomes of any air plant. These adaptations protect the delicate leaf from intense sunlight and maximize its water-absorbing surface area-- that’s what makes this plant oh so fuzzy.
When in bloom, T. stellifera produces a pink bloom stalk from which violet flower that fades into white at the tips arise…picture an ombré effect! After blooming T. stellifera sends out several offshoots, so over time, you’ll end up with an attractive clump of plants that, if hung, produces a cascading effect.
T. stellifera should be treated very much like a cactus. They grow best in full sun to partial sun and do best with infrequent watering and sparse fertilizing. It is crucial that you do not soak your T. stellifera as they are prone to rot. We recommend that you thoroughly mist every 2-3 weeks
Your specimen will be 3+ inches in length.
